Despite its growing vulnerability to extreme weather and thus the climate crisis, Bulgaria continues to depend largely on fossil fuels, in particular coal. Struggling to kick-start its energy transition, solar and wind power made up only 1.7% of the country’s total energy consumption each in 2021, and around 3% each of electricity generation. Transitioning to renewables is an absolute necessity for Bulgaria to safeguard it's future from a social, economic and environmental perspective.
As well as generating renewable electricity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels - the project creates job opportunities for the local community while additionally contributing to local infrastructure such as the upgrades to local roads and providing finance to local health care clinics.
